Gorilla Trekking Safaris Uganda & Rwanda |Gorilla Explorers
Your Journey to the Gorillas Begins Here.
Gorilla trekking offers an unparalleled wildlife experience, allowing visitors to observe endangered mountain gorillas in their natural cloud forest habitats. This unique adventure is primarily available in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. However, due to political stability and robust conservation efforts, Uganda and Rwanda are the most popular and recommended destinations for gorilla safaris. These majestic primates, a subspecies of the eastern gorilla, are critically endangered, with their global population estimated to be just over 1,000 individuals, a significant increase from previous decades thanks to dedicated conservation initiatives.
Uganda is home to roughly half of the world's remaining mountain gorilla population, primarily found within Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Bwindi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is particularly renowned for its dense forest and diverse gorilla families, offering multiple trekking sectors: Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo. Each sector provides a unique trekking experience, varying in terrain and the number of habituated gorilla families. Mgahinga, though smaller, is part of the Virunga Massif and offers the chance to see both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys, making it a unique dual-primate destination. The cost of a gorilla permit in Uganda is $800 USD as of July 1, 2024, offering a more budget-friendly option compared to Rwanda while still providing an exceptional encounter. The trekking experience in Uganda can be more challenging due to the dense forest and varied terrain, but the reward of spending an hour with a gorilla family is immeasurable
Rwanda, often referred to as the "Land of a Thousand Hills," offers a more luxurious and accessible gorilla trekking experience in Volcanoes National Park. This park, part of the larger Virunga Massif, is famous for its association with Dian Fossey, the renowned primatologist whose research and conservation efforts significantly contributed to the understanding and protection of mountain gorillas. The terrain in Volcanoes National Park is generally less strenuous than Bwindi, with well-maintained trails, making it a preferred choice for those seeking a less physically demanding trek. The gorilla permit in Rwanda is priced at $1,500 USD, reflecting its premium offering and contribution to high-end tourism and conservation efforts. Despite the higher cost, Rwanda's efficiency, excellent infrastructure, and the relatively shorter travel time from Kigali International Airport to Volcanoes National Park make it an attractive option for many travelers.
The best time for gorilla trekking in both Uganda and Rwanda is during the dry seasons, which typically run from June to September and December to February. During these months, the trails are less muddy and slippery, making the trek more manageable. While gorilla trekking is possible year-round, the wet seasons (March to May and October to November) can present more challenging conditions due to heavy rainfall, though they also offer lush scenery and fewer tourists
A typical gorilla trekking day begins early with a briefing at the park headquarters, where visitors are assigned to a gorilla family and a group of eight trekkers. Accompanied by experienced park rangers and trackers, the trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family. Once the gorillas are located, visitors are allowed to spend one hour observing them from a safe distance of at least 7 meters (23 feet). This hour is a truly magical experience, allowing for observation of their behaviors, interactions, and daily routines. It's crucial to follow all guidelines provided by the rangers to ensure the safety of both visitors and gorillas, including maintaining silence, avoiding sudden movements, and not using flash photography.
