This 4-day safari offers a thrilling combination of gorilla trekking and mountain hiking in Uganda. It typically involves tracking mountain gorillas in either Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, followed by a hike up Mount Sabyinyo in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. This itinerary is designed for those interested in both wildlife encounters and physical challenges, providing a unique opportunity to experience Uganda's diverse landscapes and wildlife.

Overview

Our 5-Day Mgahinga gorillas, golden monkey, and Bunyonyi safari will take you to Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda, Mgahinga National Park is the only park in Uganda where mountain gorillas co-exist with Golden monkeys hence a saying that it where “Gold meets silver”. Encounter Africa Safaris organizes gorilla tours to Mgahinga and our 5-Day Mgahinga gorilla golden monkey and Bunyonyi safari is meant for those who do not have enough time at their disposal but want to trek mountain gorillas and participate in the golden monkey experience or golden monkey trekking and then visit Lake Mutanda the volcanic Lake in Uganda. Our 5-Day Mgahinga gorilla, golden monkey and Lake Mutanda safari starts and ends in Entebbe with stops at the equator crossing for photography.

Day 1: Arrival in Kisoro from Entebbe

You will be picked up from your overnight hotel in Entebbe or Kampala by our driver guide who will brief you about your trip, and make sure that you have all the necessary gear and paperwork. You will then drive to Mgahinga National Park in southwestern Uganda with some stopovers at Mpambire royal drum makers to witness how drums are made from skins and wood. You will then proceed to the Equator crossing and then to Mbarara town for Lunch at Agip Motel or Igongo Cultural Center depending on the time at your disposal. After lunch, you will take a scenic drive to Kisoro district starting with the flat lands of Ntungamo, and the rolling hills of Kabale to terraced hills and meandering roads to Kisoro District. You will arrive in time for a short relaxation, dinner, and overnight at the lodge.

Day 2: Gorilla trekking in Mgahinga

After an early breakfast, our driver will drive you to Mgahinga National Park headquarters arriving in time for briefing. Before briefing, your passport details will be required to make sure that you are eligible to trek mountain gorillas. This will be followed by a briefing from one of the UWA rangers about gorilla trekking, dos and don’ts and instructions to be followed on the trek, with the gorillas, and after the trek. You will then be led to the forest to search for the mountain gorillas. Mgahinga National Park has only one habituated mountain gorilla family called Nyakagezi which used to move between Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and Mgahinga National Park, but it is now permanently resident in Uganda. Once you find Nyakagezi Family, you will be allowed one hour with the gorillas and then return to the Lodge for your overnight.

Day 3: Golden Monkey trekking Experience

After breakfast, you will transfer to Mgahinga National Park headquarters for either a full-day golden monkey habituation experience or a half-day golden monkey trekking. You will be briefed about the dos and don’ts while with golden monkeys and then proceed to the mountain/forest for your trek. You will be allowed enough time with researchers if you choose to do the golden monkey experience and only one hour if you choose to do the golden monkey trekking. Return to your lodge for relaxation, dinner, and overnight.

Day 4: Lake Mutanda Canoeing excursion

After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Mutanda located in Kisoro district which is one of the volcanic Lakes in Uganda. Lake Mutanda is seen as the best place to relax after your gorilla trek. A boat cruise will take you to several islands located in Lake Mutanda each with its different history. You may also choose to hike the hills surrounding Lake Mutanda hills and islands or do some birding.

Day 5: Transfer back to Kisoro for Departure

Today marks the end of your 5 Day Mgahinga gorillas, Golden Monkey and Bunyonyi safari. You will be transferred to Kisoro to drop off at your hotel or transfer.
