Volcano Hiking in Kisoro
For adventurous travelers, Kisoro is a launching point for hiking some of East Africa’s most iconic volcanic mountains. The three Virunga volcanoes within Uganda’s borders—Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo—can all be climbed with the help of guides and porters.
Three of the eight Virunga Volcanoes surround Kisoro, each providing unique trekking opportunities for adventurers:
Mount Muhabura (4,127m): The highest in the region, this volcano offers a tough but rewarding climb, culminating in panoramic views and a crater lake at the summit.
Mount Sabinyo (3,669m): Often called the “Old Man’s Teeth” due to its jagged peaks, this climb includes challenging ridgelines and the unique experience of standing in three countries: Uganda, Rwanda, and DRC.
Mount Gahinga (3,474m): A relatively easier hike compared to the others, Mount Gahinga has a swamp-filled crater and is covered in bamboo forest, ideal for spotting golden monkeys.
These hikes typically take a full day and are guided by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers
